QUALIFICATIONS TO BECOME A RHODE ISLAND NOTARY PUBLIC

In order to become a notary public in Rhode Island, you must meet the following requirements:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Be a citizen or a permanent legal resident of the United States
• Be a resident of or have a place of employment or practice in Rhode Island

• Be able to read and write English
• Not be disqualified to receive a commission under §42-30.1-16
• Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the powers and duties pertaining to the Office of Notary Public by taking the Rhode Island Notary Knowledge Assessment and obtaining a minimum score of 80%

If you do not meet the residency/nonresident requirement, but meet the other requirements above, you too may apply if you meet either of the following requirements:

• Be an attorney, in good standing, applying as a member of the RI Bar Association
• Be a certified public accountant, in good standing, applying as a certified RI licensee
