How does having a misdemeanor affect my ability to become a notary public?

Many people wonder if they can still become a notary public if they have been charged with an offense. It depends on the nature of the offense.

Indiana does not allow those who have been convicted of a crime resulting in more than six months imprisonment to become a notary public. If you have been convicted otherwise, you are eligible to become a notary public in Indiana. The state has no added paperwork or requirements for those who have been convicted of a crime that has not resulted in prison time or those which have resulted in less than six months. The qualifying applicant will submit their application normally. You can complete the application to become or renew a notary public on our website. From there we will walk you through the process on the Secretary of State’s website. Once you have completed the application via the Secretary of State’s website, you will automatically receive your commission certificate from them. Please, contact us and we will mail you any products you have ordered.
