Notaries Receive a Raise

Minnesota notaries finally receive a raise! Offering the first increase since 1983, House Bill H.F No. 155 passed to see Minnesota fees that a notary public may charge for certain notarial services jump from $1 to $5, effective August 1, 2014. Minnesota has not been the only state to offer a raise to their notaries. Wyoming, Maryland, and West Virginia have increased their notarial fees, with Missouri, and New York orchestrating legislation to attempt to increase theirs. Through House Bill HB0019, Wyoming increased fees for the following notarial acts to $5:  Acknowledgements (per signature), an oath or affirmation without a signature, jurats (per signature), witnessing or attesting a signature, for certifying or attesting copies (per page certified), verification upon oath or affirmation, and noting a protest. These changes become effective July 1, 2014. Maryland’s Secretary of State announced an increase in Notarial fees which became effective April 1, 2014. Maryland doubled the fee from $2 per signature to $4 per signature. Effective July 1, 2014, West Virginia House Bill 4012 —under section §39-4-30. Maximum fees-- pushed fees up to a $5 maximum. The Bill rewrote notary law for the state—not only fees. Visit Notary Public Underwriters to find more information or ask questions in our Notary Forum about your specific state rules.
