Notaries public first developed in the Roman Empire. The word notary comes from the Latin word nota. Nota was a system of short-hand Cicero’s clerk, Tullius Tiro, used to transcribe his speeches. From there they expanded to include other "scribes," and as they expanded the government started to dictate and manage their fees and duties. This eventually evolved into the position we have today.

There are 4.5 million notaries public in the United States. That’s equivalent to the entire population of New Zealand. So you've got friends all over.
