Notary Seal Requirements Per State

The above map gives you an overview of the requirements of your state, but each state has specific constraints attached to their requirements. Please, find your state below to learn the specifics of their ink stamp and embosser requirements.

Alabama: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. All documents submitted for approval need the raised embossed seal, though.

Alaska:Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it.

Arizona: Ink stamp required. Must use dark ink in the stamp (no color is specified by the Secretary of State). The embossing seal may only be used in addition to the ink stamp.

Arkansas: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it.

California: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it.

Colorado: Ink stamp required. It must contain the name of the notary, commission expiration date, the commission number, and the words “State of Colorado” and “Notary Public.” Embossers are not allowed (after 2012).

Connecticut: Not required. Optional, but NPU recommends purchasing one or the other.

Delaware: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it. Back ink is required in the use of the ink stamp.

District of Columbia: Embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it. An ink stamp may be used, but only in addition to the embossing seal.

Florida: Ink stamp required. The embossing seal may only be used in addition to the ink stamp.

Georgia: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it.

Hawaii:Ink stamp or embossing seal required.

Idaho: Ink stamp required.

Illinois: Ink stamp required. Black ink must be used.

Indiana: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it.

Iowa: Ink stamp or embossing seal required.

Kansas: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it.

Kentucky: Not required. It is optional, but recommended.

Louisiana: Not required. It is optional, but recommended.

Maine: Not required. It is optional, but recommended.

Maryland: Ink stamp or embossing seal required.

Massachusetts: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. If you choose to use the ink stamp, black ink is required.

Michigan:Not required. It is optional, but recommended. If you choose to use an official seal, the ink stamp may be used, but the embossing seal must be used in addition to the ink stamp.

Minnesota: Ink stamp required. Seal impression must be reproducibly, so it is recommended when using an embossing seal to use an impression inker with it. *****

Mississippi:Ink stamp required. The embossing seal may be used, but only in addition to the ink stamp. The seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it.

Missouri: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. If you choose to use the ink stamp, black ink is required.

Montana: Ink stamp required. Blue or black ink is required. The stamp must be rectangular in shape and have the notary’s name, the title “Notary Public for the State of Montana,” “residing at…,” commission expiration date (month/day/year).

Nebraska: Ink stamp required. Rectangular stamps are preferred by the Secretary of State’s office; they are concerned there is not enough room on many documents for the round stamp.

Nevada: Ink stamp required. Seal impression must be photographically reproducible.

New Hampshire: Ink stamp or embossing seal required.

New Jersey:Not required. It is optional, but recommended.

New Mexico: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. ­

New York: Not required. It is optional, but recommended.

North Carolina: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it.

North Dakota: Ink stamp required. Seal impression must be photographically.

Ohio: Ink stamp or embossing seal required.

Oklahoma: Ink stamp or embossing seal required.

Oregon: Ink Stamp required.  Back ink is required in the use of the ink stamp. An embossing seal may be used, but only in addition to the ink stamp. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it.

Pennsylvania: Ink stamp required. An embossing seal may be used, but only in addition to the ink stamp.

Rhode Island: Not required. It is optional, but recommended.

South Carolina: Ink stamp or embossing seal strongly recommended. The absence of a notary seal or expiration date does not invalidate the notraial act ONLY if the notary's official title is acttached. See page four of the South Carolina Notary Manual.

South Dakota: Ink stamp or embossing seal required.

Tennessee: Ink stamp required. The ink is required to NOT be black or yellow. Must be photographically.

Texas: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it. The stamp ink must be permanent.

U.S. Virgin Islands: Embossing seal required. An ink stamp may be used, but only in addition to the embossing stamp.

Utah: Ink stamp required. Purple ink is required. An embossing seal may be used, but only in addition to the ink stamp. The embossing seal must NOT be inked. Vermont: Not required. It is optional, but recommended.

Virginia: Ink stamp or embossing seal required.  Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it. Washington: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it. West Virginia: Ink stamp required. An embossing seal may be used, but only in addition to the ink stamp.

Wisconsin:Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Both may be used, but the notary’s name must appear the same on both and the imprints need to be filed with the Department.

Wyoming: Ink stamp or embossing seal required. Seal impression must be photographically, so when using an embossing seal it is necessary to use an impression inker with it.
