Notary Signing Agent Etiquette - What Not to Do in a Borrower's Home

As a signing agent, it is required that you have a high level of professionalism at all times. Many times, you are completing assignments at a borrower’s home. You should remember that you are there to complete a business transaction and that you're doing so in someone’s personal space. Be as respectful as possible.
Do not bring someone with you (even if you leave them in the car).
This is awkward for everyone involved. Having someone in the car waiting on you creates a sense of urgency that can cause your focus on the job at hand to waver. It is also uncomfortable for the signer because they can feel rushed by this. How would you feel is someone came to help you complete your loan at your house and they had their sister in the car waiting for them to be done? You would not bring someone to your office and have them sit in the corner while you worked, so avoid doing so with your signings.
Do not use your customer's bathroom.
This is a courtesy. You are there on business and should be ready to complete the loan when you arrive. Obviously we understand that sometimes you will need to use your signer’s restroom, but we caution against making it a habit.
Do not text them after the signing with personal questions.
You have the signer’s personal information. They want to feel it is safe and secure. Do not abuse this information by contacting them outside of the loan signing. Even if you feel you both get along well, do not text them with personal questions.
Do not use your cell phone.
With so much technology available these days, they say we are never fully unplugged. However, you should make an effort to be unplugged for your notary signings. As a signing agent, you are entrusted with completing the loan. The signer needs your guidance. Your full attention should be on the task to ensure nothing is being missed. Your phone should be off during the signing. If you do not feel comfortable turning it off, it should at least be on silent. It should not be taken out unless you have a question for the title company. Some signing agents say they use their phones to watch the time. Please find another way to do so. A wrist watch still works great! Your phone being on the signing table sends the wrong message and can be a distraction during the signing.
