You have a few options when your Texas notary commission expires. Either, you can renew again for a four-year commission, you let your commission lapse and renew later on down the road, or you can decide not to renew again.
In any of those scenarios, you will need to destroy your old notary stamp at some point. Even if you are renewing, your commission number will change each time you renew your notary public commission.
The destruction of your old stamp is not difficult—but it is an important step. Simply throwing away your notary stamp opens you up for fraud; something, you’ve been helping to fight against for years. (Oh, the ironies if you become a fraud victim.)
To adequately dispose of an old notary stamp, remove the rubber pad from the base of the stamp. To do so, push the stamp down so the rubber pad is exposed, and with the other hand peel it away from the base of the stamp. If you grab the rubber pad from the corners, you will not come in contact with any of the ink.
Once the stamp pad is removed, do not throw it away. First, grab a pair of scissors and cut the pad lengthwise through the middle of the imprints. Afterwards, cut horizontally through both pieces to make any imprints illegible—you do not want people to be able to see your commission number and name. Then you can dispose of the pieces of the rubber pad. Extra cautious notaries throw the pieces in separate trash bins throughout their house or office.
