What Should I Say During a Notarization?

If you’ve ever second-guessed yourself during a notarization, especially when it comes time to speak, you’re not alone. Many notaries, especially new or rarely practicing ones, aren’t always sure what to say during a verbal ceremony. But the verbal ceremony portion of a notarization isn’t optional—it’s an essential element.
The Two Most Common Types of Notarial Acts
Before you can perform the verbal ceremony of a notarization, you must know what type of notarial act you’re performing. Most notary work involves one of two types:
1. Acknowledgment
This act confirms that the signer understands the document and is signing it voluntarily. The signer may sign the document before coming to you or in your presence.
Suggested Verbal Wording:
“Do you acknowledge signing this document willingly for the purposes stated in it?”
If the signer says yes, proceed with completing the notarial certificate.
2. Oath or Affirmation (Jurat)
This act requires the signer to swear or affirm that the contents of the document are true. The signer must be present and sign in front of you.
Suggested Verbal Wording:
“Do you solemnly swear that this document's contents are true, so help you God?”
-OR-
“Do you affirm that this document's contents are true?”
Again, if the signer says yes, you may complete the notarial certificate.
Stay Consistent
Make it a habit to perform the verbal ceremony every single time—no shortcuts. Even if the signer seems rushed or says it’s unnecessary, remember: you’re protecting both yourself and the signer by following the law.
You don’t have to feel unsure during your next notarization. With the right verbal ceremony wording and a clear understanding of each notarial act, you can fulfill your duties with confidence.
