Indiana Notary Applicants – Obtaining an Indiana State Police Limited Criminal History Report

Honesty and respect for the law are core traits that every commissioned notary public must possess.

Many states’ notary laws—including Indiana’s—require notary applicants to provide information about their backgrounds.  The state entity or person(s) responsible for commissioning or appointing notaries public then evaluates each applicant’s criminal past to see if it disqualifies them from obtaining a notary public commission.

The requirement to submit an Indiana State Police Limited Criminal History Report applies to all Hoosier State notary applicants, whether they are first-timers or renewing an existing commission.  Even persons with no criminal history at all must submit this report with their notary public application.

A notary applicant may access their Limited Criminal History Report through a website provided by the Indiana State Police, which includes a very helpful and thorough FAQs section for the most common questions that users ask.  If accessing this website for the first time, be prepared to “create a new account.”  The online wizard will walk you through, step-by-step.  (Note:  it is not necessary to become an IN.gov subscriber to create an account.)

Obtaining a Limited Criminal History Report requires payment of a per-search cost:  as of October 2025, $15.70 for non-IN.gov Subscribers (this is the category applicable to most Indiana notary applicants); $15 for IN.gov Subscribers; and $7 for applicants from government agencies.  Some entities qualify for fee exemptions; those are discussed at the  State Police’s “Frequently Asked Questions” page for Limited Criminal History searches.

Please note: A small processing fee may apply in addition to the per-search cost.

With an ISP (Indiana State Police) Waiver from Fee Exemption, notary applicants from schools and other qualifying not-for-profit entities are fee-exempt when they use their ISP#.  For a list of reasons that an ISP Waiver from Fee Exemption might be granted, as well as a printable request form for obtaining a fee exemption, see “How do I apply for an ISP Customer Number” in the FAQs of the State Police’s website (see paragraph above for the link) and select question 14.
