Notary Road Safety

Many notaries have turned their notary business or side hustle into a mobile notary business. This involves meeting people at their home, office, nursing home, or other public meeting place to perform notarizations.

Here are some tips on how to stay protected during your travels as a mobile notary:

Let someone know where you are going and who you are meeting.

These days it is very important when meeting someone you do not know personally to have a friend, companion, co-worker, etc. informed where you are going and who you are meeting. If you have location sharing on your mobile device, be sure to have that turned on as well.

Public Meeting Places.

Coffee shops, bookstores, or even a local fast-food restaurant make for good meeting places—they are common and usually busy with other patrons. They can be found on almost every corner. This makes the meeting convenient for you and the signer.

Exchange physical details.

Make the meet up seamless by exchanging physical information such as the make, model, and color of your vehicle, or other details about your physical appearance, such as what color clothing you are wearing, so that you are less likely to miss one another or spend unnecessary time trying to locate each other.

Keep your phone charged.

This kind of goes without saying. Having your phone charged in case of an emergency or if you need to contact the client is a must.

Have an emergency kit handy.

Keep an emergency kit in your car. You’ll be driving more than most people, and it is never a bad idea to stay prepared. Things you should consider having are a car charger for your cell phone, jumper cables, a flashlight with batteries, water, hand sanitizer, and a blanket. Adjust the list to fit your needs.

NPU wants you to stay protected in all ways-- just as you want to take extra steps to decrease your liability while performing notarial acts, you should take extra steps to protect yourself while performing your duties.
