Happy Earth Day

 Solar Panels

Happy Earth Day! This is a day to celebrate our planet and all that it provides for us. It is also a day to reflect on our impact on the environment and make a commitment to do better.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It is also a day to take action and make changes in our own lives that can help reduce our impact on the environment. First held in 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. The official theme for 2023 is Invest In Our Planet.

How Can I Celebrate Earth Day?

There are many ways to celebrate Earth Day. Some people choose to participate in cleanups or plant trees. Others choose to learn more about environmental issues or to make changes in their own lifestyles, such as recycling more or driving less.

No matter how you choose to celebrate Earth Day, it is important to remember that every little bit helps. By taking action, we can all make a difference in protecting our planet for future generations.

How Does Notary Public Underwriters Contribute to the Environment?

At Notary Public Underwriters, we are committed to sustainability and have taken a number of steps to reduce our environmental impact, including:

  • Using solar panels. In 2007, we installed a 25kW solar Photovoltaic system and a 50kW array in 2018 which now powers 100% of our business energy needs. That's a BIG deal! This provides clean, renewable energy.
  • Using energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting. This helps to conserve energy and reduce our carbon footprint.
  • Recycling and going digital. This helps reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfills. Our efforts save 13 tons of paper, 560 pounds of aluminum, and 6 tons of cardboard from entering landfills each year!
  • Using biodegradable packing peanuts. Biodegradable packing peanuts are packing peanuts that are made from materials that will break down and decompose over time. This means that they will not end up in landfills, where they can take hundreds of years to decompose.
  • Rain gardens. To prevent precious downstream water from being polluted and soil from eroding, we built three on-site rain gardens around our building, in addition to the required storm run-off pond. This stops pollutants from traveling downstream by allowing the water to percolate directly into the ground.
  • Using Trodat stamps. All stamps from our supplier, Trodat, are completely free from harmful heavy metals such as zinc, calcium, or lead, which may be dangerous or damaging to the environment. These stamps are made with high-quality materials and are designed to withstand heavy use. This means that they will not need to be replaced as often, which reduces waste.

What Tips Do You Have That I Can Use Year-Round?

Here are some sustainable practices that our team embraces and that you can implement in your daily routine:

  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle. This is one of the most important things we can do to reduce our impact on the environment. By reducing the amount of waste we produce, we can help conserve resources and protect the environment.
  • Conserve energy. We can all do our part to conserve energy by turning off lights when we leave a room, unplugging appliances when we're not using them, and weatherstripping our homes to prevent air leaks.
  • Conserve water. This can be done by taking shorter showers, fixing any leaks in your plumbing, and watering the lawn less often.
  • Use LEDs. LEDs use less energy to produce the same amount of light, which can help reduce your carbon footprint and help you save money on your energy bill.
  • Choose sustainable products. When shopping for new products, look for those that are made with recycled materials or that are biodegradable.
  • Support sustainable businesses. When you eat out, shop at local businesses, or use services, choose those that are committed to sustainability.
  • Get involved in your community. There are many ways to get involved in your community and make a difference in the environment. You can volunteer for an environmental organization, attend city council meetings, or start a neighborhood composting program.

No matter how you choose to celebrate Earth Day, it is important to remember that every little bit helps. By taking action, we can all make a difference in protecting our planet for future generations.
